PS:ALDEIA
Reflecting on the needs and challenges of the rural sector reveals a key issue that underlies these challenges: rural depopulation. The exodus of rural populations to urban areas not only results in fewer people living in these regions but also hinders their development, largely due to the ongoing neglect by governmental institutions.
In this context, the high and growing migration rate in the countries involved in this project presents an opportunity to attract new people to these regions, helping to address some of the previously mentioned issues. However, as rural areas generally have lower levels of development, this is also reflected in a lack of preparedness to manage these changes and to adequately welcome these new residents.
It is as a result of the above that the DIVERURAL project emerged, responding to this challenge with the goal of giving visibility and a voice to the entire migrant population who have built their lives away from their homeland. These individuals represent a segment of the population to be integrated and valued within their local community. Through proposed activities that map and gather data on these individuals, Portuguese language training, the organization of intercultural evenings, and the presentation of a document to public and private organizations containing guidelines to promote and encourage inclusion, diversity, and civic participation, the aim is to strengthen the diverse identities of disadvantaged rural areas.
In this way, multiculturalism becomes a tool and a connector for individuals, shaping identities and multiethnic cultural groups. The coexistence of these cultural pluralities in disadvantaged rural areas provides a valuable source of insights for reflection and decision-making related to inclusion, participation, and engagement in the interpretation and development of the territory and its population.
In this context, the project aims to achieve its objectives through a range of activities, including: mapping migrants in the area and assessing their situations, offering 20 hours of classes in the host language, organizing multicultural nights and dinners, and producing a document with findings and recommendations to be presented to local authorities.
